"NOSTALGIA"

December 8th | Plaster, Glue, Paper, Gold Sheets, Acrylic Paint | 4.5 in X 1 in X 6 in

For this project , I poured plaster into a small box and allowed it to form into a solid rectangle. I then carved away plaster from the middle of the rectangle toward its edged, creating an indention. This idea was meant to create a space that represented framework. I then chiseled (for quite some time might I add) "pages" on three of the four sides. I used old scraps of the golden side tape from a Little Golden book and delicate sheets of golden tissue paper to recreate the binding of the Little Golden books. I cut out and pasted clippings from various children's books and created a collage in the space that was carved out.

The idea behind this piece was to capture the memory of childhood. The space that is carved out functions as a frame, which holds moments that soon turn to memories. The collage of children's book cutouts creates an artistic memoir that allows others to reflect on their personal experiences growing up.

For this project I wanted to make something that would memorialize the moments I cherished as a child. When I was younger, I found comfort in books and the ability of the imagination that allows stories to come to life. Books make it easy to escape reality with their pictures and characters, which provides most people with alleviation and relaxation.
