"OUT"

September 20th | Cardboard, wire, Elmer’s glue | 7 in x 7 in x 7 in

This piece was originated from an idea that came from my first project I made from cardboard. I cut out circles instead of squares this time around because I wanted the piece to be more complex. I created a negative space within the cube when cutting holes on each side. Inside the cube lies three pieces of vertical wire that stand side by side diagonally across the base of the cube.

When my professor ‘read’ my piece to me, he explained that I had created a prison or cage with the wire, but that the holes on each side had provided a type of escape. He then encouraged me to add something to make the escape more difficult. I then took the 2D cardboard circles that had been cut from each side of the cube and wedged them to sit horizontally in two of the cutouts.

As I began to explain my piece to the class, I realized that the idea that came from my project could visually depict a problem that is relevant to my friends life. After her parents divorcing, having a child at age 15, and having her twin brother commit suicide, she found herself stripping as a career at age 19. I felt as if the three wires in the middle could represent poles, in a tiny box that seems enclosed. However, there is always a way out, its just a matter of choosing that path or not. Some paths may encounter hardship and trial, which can be representative of the holes that have counter circles through them.

I like this piece because it is simple yet can hold meaning depending on the person who interprets it. It’s something that can easily be related to a personal experience or feeling, it is expressive, and it can hold value to anyone who longs for it.
